GOTS vs OEKO-TEX vs BCI: Which Certifications Does Your DPP Actually Need?

GOTS, OEKO-TEX, and Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) all show up on the same hangtags and get treated as interchangeable "sustainability stamps." They’re not. Each one certifies something specific, and a DPP needs to represent that difference accurately rather than bundling them as one vague "certified sustainable" claim.

GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS certifies organic fiber content and the full processing chain of custody behind it, plus a set of environmental and social criteria along the way. The key artifact you’ll deal with is the Transaction Certificate (TC) — issued per batch, not per company — which is what should actually be linked into your DPP, not just a generic "GOTS Certified" badge.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

OEKO-TEX tests the finished product for harmful substances — it’s a chemical safety certification, not an organic-origin one. A garment can be OEKO-TEX certified without being organic at all, and conversely, organic cotton still benefits from OEKO-TEX testing on the finished, dyed product.

Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)

BCI is a sourcing-level program for conventionally grown cotton produced under more sustainable farming practices. It typically operates on a mass-balance, credit-based system rather than the segregated, batch-traceable chain of custody GOTS requires — which matters if a buyer is expecting GOTS-level batch traceability and you’re holding a BCI credit instead.

Putting this in your DPP correctly

• Attach the actual certificate or Transaction Certificate ID, not just a badge image — anyone should be able to verify it against the issuing body
• Be specific about scope: "GOTS-certified organic cotton, OEKO-TEX-tested dye process" is verifiable; "certified sustainable" is not
• If you hold more than one certification, list each with its own scope rather than merging them into one claim
• Don’t let an expired certificate stay listed — a DPP that shows a lapsed certification is worse than one that shows none
